The Government of the United States of America and the Government of Burundi today signed an agreement for new USAID funding to improve accountability and transparency of government and foster an environment for free and fair elections.
Specifically, this aid will assist the Government of Burundi to revise the national electoral law in line with international standards, in preparation for the 2015 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. It will also enable Burundi to set up a mechanism to resolve any election-related disputes.
The total contribution of today’s agreement is $1 million (approximately 1.480.000.000 FBu). Additional resources will be announced in the coming months for programs in nutrition, maternal and child health, family planning/reproductive health, malaria, and HIV/AIDS.
The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. to Burundi, Samuel Watson, the USAID/Burundi Country Representative, James Anderson, and the Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation His Excellency Laurent Kavakure, signed the agreement today.
USAID—in coordination with the people and Government of Burundi and non-governmental organizations—will continue to promote Burundi’s peaceful, prosperous future.
