NAIROBI, KENYA - The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi will hold a press conference tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. local time for Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. Shah will have just returned from a one-day trip to visit crisis affected communities in Northern Kenya (Wajir and the Ifo Camp within the Dadaab complex) and will explain the U.S. response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.
Dr. Shah will reiterate USAID's commitment to support these communities, as well as those in Ethiopia and Somalia that have been affected by the drought, and to ensure them of the Obama Administration's concern. A rapidly escalating succession of challenging events -- crop failure, livestock deaths, prices beyond what most families can afford -- all compounded by a lack of rain, have left millions in need of additional assistance over the days and months ahead. The American People have helped more than 4.1 million East Africans through the provision of $383 million in fiscal year 2011 including emergency food and water, health care and hygiene supplies.
