Increased Regional Trade and Integration
Overview
The USAID East Africa Mission serves some of the world’s poorest nations. Economic growth in the region is dampened by a lack of industrial competitiveness, poor infrastructure, low agricultural productivity, and poor management of natural resources. USAID/East Africa works with bilateral mission and regional organizations to promote broad-based economic growth and reduce fragility by increasing agricultural productivity, removing barriers to trade, and raising incomes. Activities supported by USAID East Africa aim to achieve the goals of both the Presidential Initiative to End Hunger in Africa (IEHA) and the Africa Global Competitiveness Initiative (AGCI). Environmental sustainability is a deeply held value of USAID/EA, and the office hosts the East and Central Africa regional Environmental Quality Management (EQM) team, based in the Regional Economic Growth and Integration (REGI) Office. One of the important roles the EQM team plays is to ensure that the spirit and letter of the Agency’s Environmental Procedures are complied with, to support the achievement of quality development results.

Inauguration of One Stop Border Post Railway System and HIV/AIDS SafeT Stop Project
The United States Agency for International Development will host a dual inauguration of its One Stop Border Post Railway Station and the HIV/AIDS SafeTStop Project. The event will take place on both the Kenya and Uganda sides of the border on Tuesday, May 23. The celebration marks an historic moment in the economic development of Kenya and Uganda.

For many of you here, New Year’s Day 2005 was not the great celebration of years past. On that day, with a single stroke, 30 years of protection for one of the developing world’s most vulnerable industries – cotton fiber and textiles - came to an end. The cessation of the World Trade Organization’s Multi-Fiber Agreement, dealt all of you a rude blow.

From an idea, a good idea, but nevertheless, just an idea, I see here today a network of very savvy business women -150 women from 7 countries. I’m told you are just “finding” your communal voice. But trust me, you are there. I can hear you. And if you pick up the phone to COMESA, speaking in that strong, communal voice, I can guarantee you COMESA’s going to hear you!
