Regional Enhanced Livelihood in Pastoral Areas (RELPA)
The RELPA program is aimed at increasing the resiliency of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in drought-prone areas by stabilizing and improving their livelihoods. The program is focused in the greater Mandera Triangle area – the tri-country border area of northeast Kenya, southeast Ethiopia and southwest Somalia, where pastoralists regularly move across national borders with their herds in search of water and pasture. The Regional Enhanced Livelihoods in Pastoral Areas program bridges the gap between emergency relief assistance in pastoral areas and more sustainable economic livelihoods. Through four inter-related activities, the program addresses 1) emergency assistance to affected populations, 2) conflict prevention and mitigation, 3) livestock-based and alternative livelihood development, 4) increased COMESA involvement and representation of pastoralists, including regional policy affecting pastoralists and cross-border trade in live animals, and 5) improving regional early warning information and dissemination.
