If it were between countries, we'd call it a war. If it were a disease, we'd call it an epidemic. If it were an oil spill, we'd call it a disaster.  But it is happening to women, and it's just an everyday affair.                                                                                                                   www.michaelkaufmann.com

Gender-based violence (GBV) in East Africa takes many forms--domestic abuse, rape, child marriage, denial of opportunities, and so on.  Individuals and institutions both perpetrate such violence. Several USG agencies are addressing aspects of GBV such as male norms around HIV and legislation that protects women.  The USAID/East Africa Regional Program supports these efforts with regional literature reviews, donor coordination on GBV, development of outcome measures for GBV programs, and training in GBV programming.  USAID/EA programs to address GBV work closely with government bodies, non-governmental organizations, faith-based organizations, organizations of religious leaders, European donors, and others.
