Limited Presence Countries
USAID/East Africa supports programs in several countries in the East Africa region in which there is limited or no USAID presence. Its programs are working to support peace in the region and providing substantial amounts of development, humanitarian and emergency assistance. The Limited Presence Countries are managed out of the USAID/East Africa office in Nairobi and currently include Somalia, Burundi, Djibouti and the Comoros.
The LPC program works with governments, donor organizations and other partners in a variety of ways in each country, helping to advance transformational development. In Burundi, the program focuses on improving governance, strengthening health systems including HIV/AIDS, diversifying livelihoods, vocational training, and food security. In Djibouti, activities are concentrated on improving the quality of education, particularly for girls, improving health systems and access, and strengthening governance and civil society. In Somalia, USAID is supporting peace building and national reconciliation initiatives; building the capacity of governing institutions and civil society groups to support the establishment of a functioning national government; supporting the delivery of social services and meeting humanitarian and early recovery needs. In the Comoros, USAID is working to update teacher training methods through distance learning technology.
USAID’s vision for LPC’s is the same as its vision for all east and central African countries; to become a region in which a healthy, educated and productive population can live in security, stability and peace. By addressing the differing needs of each LPC, USAID is working to achieve this vision.
