USAID/East Africa: From the American People

Program

Conflict Mitigation

Peace Advanced in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes

Program Description

Read newly updated: Regional Conflict Management & Governance Fact Sheet 2008

Regional, multi-sectoral interventions prevent and mitigate conflict as well as address the root causes of instability. This is being achieved through a combination of improved early warning systems, responsive leadership at local, national and regional levels, and the introduction of anti-corruption measures that reduce insecurity in areas such as the regional transport sector.  USAID/East Africa is supporting the development of conflict mitigation and management strategies and structures that build political will and institutional capacity to respond to and prevent violence in border regions in East Africa.

USAID/East Africa’s efforts are concentrated on strengthening regional government institutions as well as working with other donors to identify entry points for improved transparency and enhancing regional trade to benefit the citizens of the region.  This approach includes working with civil society organizations. By providing cross-sectoral and conflict sensitive assistance in health and education, USAID/EA also hopes to target vulnerable woman and youth populations, leading to a more stable future.
