Djibouti’s National Population and Housing Census Ready to Roll

In support of the planned January, 2009 national census, the US Government recently handed over IT and office equipment to the Djibouti Census Office.  USAID support to the Djibouti census includes equipment, technical assistance and training valued at $263,000.

Ambassador James Swan, speaking during the handover ceremony, underscored that the donation is being complemented by in-country technical assistance from U.S. experts with the US Bureau of Census.

The Director of the Djibouti Census Office expressed gratitude to USAID for the donation, adding that his office would make good use of the equipment during the Census taking exercise.

Djibouti first attempted to conduct a census in 1983 but those results and all attempts since then have not succeeded.  Therefore, the anticipated census results--accurate, population-based data--are vitally important and will be used by the Djibouti Government, USAID and other donors to inform important decisions on policy and development related issues.
