On September 25, Chargé d’affaires Eric Wong and USAID/East Africa Mission Director Cheryl Anderson signed two Assistance Agreements with the Government of the Republic of Djibouti (GORD), represented by the Djiboutian Minister Delegate for International Cooperation Mr. Ahmed Ali Silay. The signing of the two Agreements, for Health and Education respectively, represents a US commitment totaling more than $2.7 million USD in the Investing in People Objective of the Foreign Assistance Framework.
Health funds are designated for strengthening the Ministry of Health’s activities aimed at polio eradication through social mobilization, epidemiological surveillance and routine immunization programs. The health program also aims to improve the capacity of the National TB Control Program while reducing transmission of the disease.
In partnership with the GORD, USAID also seeks to strengthen the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) planning division, support decentralized educational management and refine its strategic planning framework. These targeted efforts will assist the MOE to realize its goals of increased access to basic education, in particular for girls; expanded community participation in education; improved quality of teaching and learning; and increased opportunities for out-of-school youth.

Both the USG and GORD delegations remarked on the close collaboration between the two countries, and how that cooperation has led to visible results on the ground. The Minister called it an ‘exemplary partnership’ as he officially welcomed the new USAID Representative, Stephanie Funk.
The US Mission in Djibouti and USAID/East Africa are proud to continue their successful collaboration with a vital regional partner in the shared goal of improving the quality of life through healthcare and education for all Djiboutians.
