Out-of-School Youth Trained in Heavy Machinery Operation

Experience opens up opportunities for Djiboutian youth to get ahead

On Dec 17, 2007, W. Stuart Symington, US Ambassador to Djibouti, and Representatives from the Ministry of Employment and Education presided over a graduation ceremony for 13 Djiboutian interns in USAID/Djibouti’s “Employment Opportunities for Out-of-School Youth” activity. The ceremony was organized under the patronage of his Excellency the Prime Minister, Mr. Dileita Mohamed Dileita, and held at Cheikh Osman Military Camp.

Through this program, 70 out-of-school youth are being trained to work with heavy machinery, leading to direct employment following graduation.  The activity is part of the fourth component of USAID/Djibouti’s Education program, working through PROJET AIDE (International Assistance for the Development of Education) and implemented by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and Save the Children (US). The aim is to support families’ motivation to enroll and keep children in school.

USAID has partnered with the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Employment, the SNA (Training Center for the Djiboutian army) and the port of Djibouti to provide these internships, helping out-of-school youths get jobs and eventually take care of themselves, their families and communities. By the end of FY 2008 a hundred young people are expected to benefit from this program.
