USAID Contributes $15.5 Million to Burundi’s Development

On September 17, the U.S. Charge d’Affaires to Burundi, Ambassador Charles Twining, the USAID Country Representative for Burundi, Mr. James Anderson and the Burundian Minister of External Relations and
International Cooperation, His Excellency Mr. Augustin Nsanze, signed three bilateral agreements for $15.5 million to support development projects for governing justly and democratically, economic growth and health.
In the agriculture sector, $4.3 million will help stimulate agri-business development and increase Burundi’s competitiveness in trade and investment. To improve the health of Burundian women and children, $7.3 million will be used to support maternal and child health programs, malaria control and HIV/AIDS. USAID is also providing $3.9 million to advance good governance and a transparent, democratic election process in 2010.
