The Somali Civil Society and Media in Transition Program (CSMT) was designed to build upon USAID’s experience in supporting Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Somalia over the past ten years, most recently its support of Somali CSOs through a four year Cooperative Agreement with CARE entitled “The Civil Society Expansion Program“(CSEP). The CSMT program will help to strengthen civil society institutions, scale-up associations and networks, and build constructive, enabling relationships between civil society and public sector institutions that foster state-building. Through this activity, it is expected that the number of journalists trained in basic journalism will increase, as well as their ability to report with integrity on human rights. In addition, networks of media associations throughout Somalia will be improved, along with an increase in their responsiveness to their constituent elements. An NGO code of conduct will be established and the institutional capacities of NGOs will be increased. Through these and other expected results, CSOs and media will increase their capacity to promote sustainable peace and reconciliation, democratic governance and development to overcome the climate of violence and state collapse that has engulfed Somalia for over ten years.
